How to look

Canada has an open labour market. Companies can hire and fire employees very easily. This country also has a competitive labour market, people change jobs frequently.

This means that you have to be aggressive in your search. The first thing is to know what kind of internship you want. What industry? What are those jobs called in Canada? Our Industry Guide section has more information on that.

Next you need to know where you want to work. The previous section will help you with that.

Once you know this, begin your search. There are two ways to do this. The first is to find available internships and apply for them. The second is to find interesting companies and see if they will create an internship just for you.

To look for an existing internship you might want to start with university and college websites. In Canada, internships are usually called 'Co-Op's. You can find a complete list of Canadian University Co-Op Programs here.

A few will post a list of current co-op positions available, many more will have the names of the companies they have worked with in the past listed on their websites or in their newsletters. If a company has worked with a University Co-Op program in the past, they are more likely to work with you - an intern - in the future.

Besides this you can also look for internship postings at companies. An internet search will find you one or two - but the best way is to do a 'blog' search. Most jobs in Canada are not advertised, those that are, are advertised in unusual places like on a company blog or in a website like craigslist.

If you want to search by company as opposed to job opening, then do a regular google search like this with the name of the industry you want and the city you want.

Once you have your list of companies ready, the next step is to think about how you will talk to them.
