When to look

You have competition. When you look for an internship you are competing against people from other countries and against people from Canada. To increase your chances of getting an internship, you need to time your search so that you are competing with as few Canadians as possible.

Most Canadian high school students and many Canadian university and college students must take an internship in order to graduate. You're not competing with high school students, but you should be worried about the university students. competing with as few Canadians as possible.

Canadian university students can do their internship at any time, but the majority do them in summer. They begin their searches 3 months in advance of their internship start - in other words they start looking in February. This means that the worst time to do your internship search would be February, March and April. competing with as few Canadians as possible.

When is the best time? Those university internship terms finish in August which also coincides with the peak hiring season for full time staff. So in the period starting in August and ending in October, Canada sees a turnover in a huge number of jobs. As an example, in the city of Vancouver alone, more than 50,000 new jobs were added in that 3 month period last year. competing with as few Canadians as possible.

August to October are the best times to look for another reason. The earliest you can apply for an internship or working holiday visa is in December. There are a limited number of these visas and some of them run out in February, so it is important that you have everything organized by November 30th.
