Germany, the Netherlands & Austria

Canada has student exchange visa agreements with Germany, the Netherlands and Austria. These visas go under many different names - the important thing to remember for these is that there are a limited number and if you do not apply for your visa before March, you likely will not receive one.

Visas for German Citizens

There are two types of visas available for German citizens wishing to come to Canada. There is a large quota of visas, though because of the high demand, the quota is often met in January. This means that it is very important for you to prepare for your Canadian trip well in advance of your departure date.

Youth Mobility Program - Work and Travel
In order to qualify for this visa you must be a Germany Citizen between the ages of 18 and 35. This visa allows you to come and work in Canada in almost any job you choose (except childcare and healthcare) for up to one year. You are able to change jobs and locations as often as you like.

There is no fee for this visa, but you should not expect to find any visas remaining after the 1st of February. You can apply for this visa in December of the previous year. The Young Workers Exchange Visa is open to post-secondary students and young professionals. In order to qualify for this visa you must be a German Citizen, currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, or employed in your field of studies, you must be between 18 and 35 and have an offer of employment from a Canadian company. There is no fee for this visa, but you should not expect to find any visas remaining after the 1st of February. You can apply for this visa in December of the previous year. All applications must be made to the Canadian Embassy in Berlin. Don't forget - you must have a job offer from a Canadian company, before you apply for this visa. Visas for Dutch Citizens

There are two visas available for citizens of the Netherlands. There is a total quote of fewer than 5,000 visas. In 2007 both quotas were met in April.

Young Workers Exchange Visa

Visas for Austrian Citizens

There is one industry-specific visa available for Austrian citizens who want to come to Canada. That is the Young Workers Exchange Visa. This visa is open to Austrian citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 who are currently (or within the past 12 months) students of forestry, agriculture or tourism.

This visa allows Austrians to work in Canada for up to 6 months. To apply for this visa you will need proof of your attendance at a post-secondary institution and a signed job offer from a Canadian employer which includes your salary, and job description. Your internship must be within your field of work.
